The Importance of Investing Time in Your Plumbing Before Vacation

It is crucial to take care of your plumbing requirements before heading out on vacation

When you're eagerly counting down the days until vacation, it's easy to let regular home maintenance slip your mind. However, it's crucial not to overlook the plumbing system. There's nothing worse than returning from a relaxing vacation to find a plumbing disaster at home. Items like a burst pipe or a leak can cause extensive damage.

1. Turn Off Your Water Supply

The first step in pre-vacation plumbing preparation is turning off your water supply. This ensures that, should there be any leaks while you're away, they won't lead to extensive water damage. The last thing you want is to find your basement flooded upon return! Locate your home's main water valve and turn it clockwise until it's fully closed. This may not be necessary for short trips, but if you'll be away for a week or more, it's a good precaution.

2. Turn Off and Unplug Any Appliances That Use Water

For added security, consider turning off any appliances that use water.

This includes your washing machine, dishwasher, and ice maker.
By unplugging these appliances, you're adding an extra layer of protection against potential leaks.

While many modern appliances come with automatic shut-off features, they're not entirely fail-safe.

For your own peace of mind, just switch them off.

3. Check and Clean Your Gutters

Lastly, but by no means least, clean your gutters. Gutters filled with debris can cause water to overflow onto your roof or the ground, potentially leading to significant damage. Make sure your gutters are clear of leaves, branches, and other debris. Additionally, check to ensure they're securely attached and that water can freely pass through. Remember, prevention is key when it comes to maintaining your plumbing system!

The preparation you take before vacation can save you a lot of headaches (and potentially high costs) later on. Don't forget your plumbing when planning your time away – your home will thank you for it!
